LEWISTON – Gerard Joseph Dostie, 87 of Greene, died Wednesday, March 25, at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 21, 1921, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, a son of the late Dolor and Marie Ann (Lajoie) Dostie of Winthrop. He completed his 12 years of school in Winthrop schools and later joined the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Naval Aviation Ordinanceman 2nd Class and was stationed in the Pacific Theater until his discharge at the end of the war.

He married the love of his life, the former Madeleine Bernard on June 23, 1947, at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Lewiston. They settled in the town of Greene, building a small family farm in which to raise three sons. They farmed a wide variety of livestock, vegetables, and fruits, including raspberries, and his prized high-bush blueberries that were sold to friends and local markets. He was an avid outdoorsman; enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping and canoeing.

He was a longtime member of the St. Francis Mission in Greene. Besides his farm, he was employed at Goldfine Textile Mill in Winthrop, Albany Felt in Monmouth, Continental Mill in Lewiston, Pioneer Plastics in Auburn and lastly, retiring after 16 years in 1984 from Tambrands in Auburn.

He is survived by his loving sons, Michael and his wife, Kathryn (Labbay) of Lisbon, Andre’ and his wife, Debra (Courbron), of Leeds and Paul of Greene; grandchildren, Heidi Dyer of Leeds, Heather Dostie of Lewiston and Nathaniel Dostie of the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Germany; great-grandchildren, Dalton and Kelsey Dyer of Leeds and Candice Morse of Lewiston; brothers, Rosaire of Greene and Joseph of Sebring Fla.; sisters, Clara Rheaume of Winthrop, Dolores Kepchar of Stamford, Conn., and Elizabeth Dostie of Winthrop.

He was predeceased by his wife, Madeleine Dostie in 1968; brothers, Francis of Marlboro Mass., Leo of Winthrop and Robert of Livermore; sisters, Sister Cecelia of Sisters of Mercy Convent in Portland, Mathilda Poulin of Lewiston and Rose Rousseau of Auburn.

The family would like to give special thanks to Gerard’s physician Dr. Karim Yacoub and the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital, d’Youville Pavilion and Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice.
