BANGOR (AP) – Maine has festivals that pay tribute to clams, lobsters and blueberries.
Now, there are plans to celebrate the unobscured views of the night sky over Mount Desert Island.
Peter Lord of the Island Astronomy Institute said the Acadia Night Sky Festival is planned for Sept. 17-21, during a weekend with a new moon.
Lord told the Bangor Daily News that the event will feature scientific stargazing sessions along with other events not dependent on a clear night sky.
Eastern Maine is among the few places in the eastern U.S. where the night sky is mostly unobscured by street lamps, porch lights and powerful outdoor halogen and sodium vapor bulbs.
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park have taken steps to limit light pollution on Mount Desert Island.
