BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Andrew Volkening made 43 saves, and Derrick Burnett and Jacques Lamoureux scored in Air Force’s 2-0 victory over Michigan on Friday in the first round of the NCAA hockey East Regional.

Air Force (28-10-2) will face Vermont on Saturday night in the regional final.

Michigan, the No. 1 seed in the region, finished the season 29-12-0.

Burnett opened the scoring on a power with 4:42 left in the first period, beating Bryan Hogan with a wrist shot into the top-left corner. Lamoureux made it 2-0 at 7:02 of the second, taking a pass from Matt Fairchild and sliding the puck past Hogan.

Michigan, shut out for the fifth time this season and the first time in 71 NCAA tournament games, outshot Air Force 16-3 in the first period and 43-13 overall,

The Wolverines were 0-for-7 on the power play, failing to convert on an early 1:19 5-on-3 skating advantage.

Vermont 4, Yale 1

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Rob Madore made 26 saves, and Corey Carlson, Viktor Stalberg, Colin Vock and Peter Lenes scored for Vermont.

The third-seeded Catamounts improved to 21-11-5.

Yale finished the season 24-8-2.

West Regional

Miami, Ohio 4, Denver 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Justin Mercier, Alden Hirschfield and Bill Loupee scored to give Miami of Ohio an early three-goal lead, and Cody Reichard made 17 saves.

Andy Miele also scored for Miami (21-12-5).

The RedHawks advanced to face the Minnesota Duluth-Princeton winner in the regional final Saturday night.

Joe Colborne and Tyler Bozak had power-play goals for Denver, the top seed in the region. The Pioneers finished the season 23-12-5.
