AUBURN – A woman was hospitalized Friday night after reporting she was stabbed by a man who stole her purse before fleeing in a black truck on the west side of Lake Auburn.

The woman called police about 10 p.m. and told a dispatcher she was inside her car on the gated end of Whitman Spring Road and that she had been stabbed several times.

When police arrived, they found the woman inside her Honda, parked near the gate at the closed end of Whitman Spring Road off West Auburn Avenue.

Police said the woman appeared to have suffered three wounds, to her abdomen and upper arm. None of the wounds appeared life threatening, police said.

She was examined at the scene and later taken to Central Maine Medical Center.

The woman told police a man had stabbed her and drove away in a truck though it was not immediately clear where the incident took place.

Police notified departments in surrounding towns and began to search the area around the lake. By 11 p.m., officers working in thick fog were photographing and collecting potential evidence in the area around the woman’s car.

The spot where the woman was parked is a short distance from the end of Lake Shore Drive.

The woman was not identified. Police were continuing to investigate late Friday.
