GRAY (AP) – Fire officials say a faulty electrical transformer was the likely cause of small fires at four houses and a doctor’s offices along a stretch of Shaker Road in Gray.

Fire Chief Rick Plummer told the Portland Press Herald that the transformer problem apparently caused a surge of electricity to enter the buildings.

No injuries were reported in the Tuesday afternoon fires.

Plummer said the fires filled the buildings with smoke and apparently damaged appliances and electronic equipment.

Because of the number of fires, Gray summoned help from fire companies from five neighboring communities.
