AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Officials from rural school districts are making their case before a legislative committee for bills to modify Maine’s 2007 school consolidation law by allowing more time to comply and eliminating penalties for non-compliance.

And Wednesday afternoon, state Education Commissioner Susan Gendron gives the Education Committee her reasons for opposing a bill to repeal the consolidation law. The bill comes to the Legislature by way of a citizen initiative that will put the repeal proposal before voters next fall.

The consolidation law that was pushed by Gov. John Baldacci requires Maine’s 290 school administrative units to be reorganized into about 80 regional units. The administration reports widespread compliance.
