Residents of Poland will be heading to the annual town meeting April 4. Before people make any decisions, I know I don’t have to remind them that the economy is in rough shape. All of the departments in town are doing a great job, but it’s time to cut back for now.
Does the town need a library functioning 50 hours a week when there are libraries in both of the schools? It was a necessity when there was one small school with no library.
It’s not a necessity anymore.
Are two full-time attendants and part-time ones needed at the transfer station? With the cost for recycling not being an advantage anymore, it seems the town could get by with a smaller number of attendants. Durham and Raymond have curbside pickup; the town should look into that as a cost-saving measure.
I know for a fact that 10 teachers are being cut in the three schools. If that department can cut, I think the other departments could as well.
The Highway Department never replaced the last person who left, so it did its part, too. The roads were the best this winter that they have ever been. The highway employees seem to be striving to make it even better.
People were told that recreation would be self-supporting. It isn’t.
Residents should think long and hard about how tax money is spent before they vote in a new budget that the taxpayers could do without.
