Canton – Marie “Mary” Claire Sawtelle, 78, a former resident of Otis Street, Jay, passed away Saturday, April 4, at Victorian Villa in Canton, where she had been a resident since April 2007.

She was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Chisholm, the daughter of Cleophas and Marie Blanche (Caron) Grondin. She attended school in Jay.

On July 7, 1950, she married Lawrence Robert Sawtelle of Wilton. He passed away May 10, 2007.

She was a very dedicated homemaker and they lived and raised their family in Wilton and Jay area. Mary was a devoted and loving wife and mother caring for her family. After her son Jeffrey passed away at age 12 due to medical disabilities, Mary went to work at G.H. Bass in Wilton. Mary was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay and a member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son, Lawrence Michael Sawtelle of Hartford; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sawtelle of Jay; Virginia Sawtelle of Winthrop; and a brother-in-law Rodney Sawtelle and his wife, Frances, of Wilton.

She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Sawtelle in 1967; a sister, Marie Evelyn Grondin, Aug. 18, 2007; brothers-in-law, Leo Paul, David and Reginald Sawtelle; and her sister-in-law Shirley Sawtelle.
