FARMINGTON – The opening of the online Western Maine Market connecting local farmers and producers with customers went well, said Tricia Cook of the Western Mountains Alliance.

The first pickup of about a dozen orders started equally well Tuesday afternoon as farmers brought eggs, spinach and jellies to the distribution site at Tranten’s Market where orders were available for customers from 4 to 6 p.m.

“We’re very pleased. We received some great comments about the Web site and its functionality,” Cook said.

The site – www.westernmainemarket.com – is still under construction but the market opened Friday. Although the growing season is just getting started, local foods and products can be found on the site, including baked goods, honey and maple syrup, frozen blueberries, cheese and preserves, she said.

The market opens every Friday giving customers an opportunity to browse what farmers, growers and bakers have to offer then place an order by Monday.

Cook relays the order to the producer, who brings the items to Tranten’s on Tuesday afternoon for consumer pickup.

“We’re thrilled. More farmers are calling every day to join,” she said.
