Many people have been feeling overly tired lately, but don’t worry, you’re not sick. Every year during the winter this happens. The decrease in sunlight makes people eat more and become really tired and depressed. Experts are trying to solve this annual problem by prescribing drugs as well as talk and light therapy. I believe this is not the way to go! Why pollute your body or waste money on treatment when a simple solution is just to get more sunlight during the day!
This effect on your body is called seasonal affective disorder or SAD. Kind of ironic, right? This disorder is caused because during the winter our bodies produce more melatonin which is a sleep hormone that also may affect your depression level. The lack of sunlight creates a lack in serotonin which “is a brain chemical triggered by sunlight.” The good news is that this won’t last forever, and if you can’t bear to wait that long, there is such a thing as a sun lamp that produces the light you need from the sun. So just hang in there and it’ll be summer before you know it!
