AUGUSTA (AP) – The Legislature’s Taxation Committee has turned thumbs down on a citizen initiative to reduce the motor vehicle excise tax, setting the stage for a November referendum on the question.
Republican Sen. Richard Nass of Acton said on Monday that panel members agreed that the best course was to vote against the bill and let the voters decide.
The Maine Heritage Policy Center, a conservative think-tank, came up with the plan to reduce excise taxes by about $80 million a year.
Municipal officials, who use the money to pay for road work, testified at a hearing that they would be forced to raise property taxes to offset the lost revenue.
