FARMINGTON – Edith McCleery and daughter, Susan McCleery Small, will present a program on “The Little Red School House” at the Farmington Historical Society’s first meeting in 2009 on Monday, April 13, in the basement of the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, Academy Street. A potluck dinner will be held at 6 p.m., with the program beginning at 7. The public is invited.

The Little Red Schoolhouse was built in 1852 on Routes 2 and 4. In 1957 its use as a school was discontinued. In 1972 it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007 it was relocated to the Farmington Fairgrounds and, under the direction of Don DesRoches, was restored and equipped to reflect the history of its use.

Edith McCleery’s late husband, Robert, was educated in the school as were four of his six children, including Susan.

McCleery supported the relocation of the schoolhouse to the fairgrounds and assisted DesRoches in cataloging the memorabilia.

The society meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. during April, May, June, September, October, November and December. Dues are $20. For membership information, contact Cindy Stevens at 778-4301.
