ELLSWORTH (AP) – The Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth is laying off 14 employees and cutting compensation for top executives as it struggles with the economic downturn.

Officials at the 60-bed hospital said 12 full-time and two part-time employees were laid off Wednesday. Another eight vacant positions will not be filled.

Vice President Kristin Tardiff told the Bangor Daily News that the cuts should save the hospital about $900,000 a year and are needed to help it weather the economic downturn.

She said the hospital is also struggling with a backlog of reimbursements owed by the state for services rendered under MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program for low-income and disabled residents.
