RUMFORD – Vivian M. Nokes, 71, of Rumford, died Thursday, April 9, of complications from pneumonia and after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born June 16, 1937, Vivian Marie Palumbo in the North End of Boston, the daughter of the late Michael and Laurene Palumbo.

On Oct. 6, 1956, she married E. Theodore Nokes, and shortly after moved to Maine to raise her family. With her husband Ted, they owned and operated the Mexico Bowl-O-Dome and Oxford Lanes for many years.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with family and friends. She had a passion for cooking and loved to cook the food of her Italian heritage. She enjoyed spending time at the beach, reading, shopping and listening to music.

Surviving are her children, Theodore Nokes and wife, Eileen, of Dexter, N.H., Richard Nokes and wife, Deborah, of Rumford, Stephen Nokes and wife, Cheryl, of Peru, Laura Nokes of South Paris and Gregory Nokes of Auburn; six grandchildren, Deanna Petrie and husband, Gary, Kyle Dinsmore and wife, Jennifer, Travis Dinsmore and wife, Joelle, Michael Nokes, Thomas Nokes and Stephen Nokes; and a sister-in-law, Anna Palumbo of Swampscott, Mass.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, E. Theodore Nokes in 1985; five brothers, Benjamin, Michael, William, Richard and Robert Palumbo; four sisters, Doris Palumbo, Elaine Sacco, Irene Ciampa and Rose Palumbo, and a grandson, Matthew Nokes.
