KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals placed right fielder Jose Guillen on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a partially torn hip flexor and purchased the contract of right-hander Sidney Ponson from Triple-A Omaha.

Guillen started the first three games for the Royals, opening the season 2-for-12 (.167) with no extra-base hits. He hit .264 with 20 homers and 97 RBIs last season after signing a $36 million, three-year contract with Kansas City.

Signed to a minor league contract on March 17, the 32-year-old Ponson started against his former team, the New York Yankees, on Friday in his Royals’ debut.

Ponson was 8-5 with a 5.04 ERA in 25 starts with the Yankees and Texas last season.
