SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) — Construction crews will be kept busy until late summer on a major repaving project on the Maine Turnpike that begins this week.

The $5.6 million project will take place on a nine-mile stretch between Saco and South Portland.

It involves removing old pavement, laying new pavement and upgrading the highway’s drainage system.

Turnpike officials are cautioning drivers that there will be occasional delays throughout the project, but that much of the work will be done at night to minimize traffic disruptions. An estimated 80,000 vehicles per day are expected to travel through the construction zone this summer.
