DETROIT – Armando Galarraga threw 6 1-3 scoreless innings and Placido Polanco drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Galarraga (2-0) ended Chicago’s three-game winning streak, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Jose Contreras (0-2) took the loss, giving up five runs – three earned – on five hits in 5 2-3 innings
Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Josh Anderson and Ramon Santiago walked, and after Curtis Granderson hit into a force at second, Polanco hit a two-run double over Brian Anderson’s head in center.
The Tigers made it 5-0 in the sixth on Miguel Cabrera’s leadoff homer and a two-run single by Santiago.
Galarraga left to a standing ovation after walking Paul Konerko with one out in the seventh.
