FREEPORT – Nick Douglass threw a one-hitter and struck out 11 batters, and Ben Pipper went 4-for-4 at the plate as Poland pummeled Freeport with a 15-0 victory in a Western Maine Conference baseball opener Thursday afternoon.
By the second inning, the Knights were leading, 9-0. Poland piled up six more runs in the fourth inning, and the game ended in the fifth when the 10-run rule was implemented.
Catcher Trey Ouellette smacked a solo homer and Douglass and Kyle Bates each had two hits.
Girls’ lacrosse
Mountain Valley 11, Gardiner 4
RUMFORD – Ayla Allen netted four goals to lead Mountain Valley to an 11-4 victory over Gardiner in KVAC girls’ lacrosse season opener Thursday.
Emily Child registered a hat trick for the Falcons, who took an 8-1 lead into the break. Tia White also contributed with a pair of goals, while single tallies from Brittany Culombe and Nicole LaVorgna completed the scoring.
Kim McComber led the Tigers with two goals, while Caitlin Phillips and Angela Hoenshell also tallied. Hollie Theriault made five saves in net for Mountain Valley to notch the win. Paige Avlieu (nine) and Ashley Work (seven) combined for 16 saves between the posts for Gardiner.
Softball
Freeport 4, Poland 3
FREEPORT – Dani Perry scored the winning run on Theresa Flynn’s bunt in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving Freeport a 4-3 victory over Poland in a softball opener Thursday.
The Knights jumped out to 3-0 lead in the second inning, but they never saw homeplate again. The Dragons tied it up with three runs in the seventh inning. Freeport’s Hannah Schuchert was the only repeat hitter of the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
