KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Royals third baseman Alex Gordon has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a cartilage tear in his right hip.

The Royals said Thursday that Gordon will undergo surgery in Vail, Colo., on Friday to have the tear repaired. His return is uncertain.

Gordon had just two hits in 21 at-bats over seven games this season.

The Royals plan to recall outfielder Mitch Maier from Triple-A Omaha to fill Gordon’s spot on the roster. The 26-year-old Maier has hit .370 with two homers and nine RBIs through six games in the minor leagues.

Maier’s first game will be Friday night against the Rangers in Arlington, Texas.
