NEW YORK (AP) – The Rangers have signed Hobey Baker Award winning defenseman Matt Gilroy just days after he helped Boston University win the NCAA championship.

Just one week after the 24-year-old Gilroy captured the Hobey Baker as the nation’s top hockey player, the defenseman agreed to a multiyear deal with New York on Friday. He is not able to play for the Rangers until next season.

The Long Island native, who was an undrafted free agent, joins Rangers captain Chris Drury as the only Boston University players to win the Hobey Baker. Gilroy also is the first Hockey East defenseman to be a first-team All-American three times.

Gilroy had eight goals and 29 assists in 45 games this season and captained the Terriers to their fifth NCAA championship. He was third in the nation among defensemen in scoring.
