AUBURN – Walter Eugene Hunnewell, 81, of Park Avenue, passed away Thursday, April 16, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.

He was born in Auburn, June 23, 1927, the son of the late Grover Richard Hunnewell and Catherine Ann Neal. He graduated from Edward Little High School and served his country in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He married Freda Fogg May 23, 1959. He was employed 32 years as a lineman for New England Telephone Co. and after retirement operated a firewood business, splitting and delivering firewood locally.

He was a member of the Auburn United Methodist Church, Telephone Pioneers of America, Ashlar Lodge AF & AM and a 50-plus year member of Danville Junction Grange 65. He will be remembered as a loving, devoted husband and hard worker. He loved attending high school basketball and softball games, fishing, hunting and the great outdoors was his love and joy. He will be fondly remembered as “Pepere Softball” by the Saint Dom’s softball team. He especially enjoyed spending time doing hobbies with his wife, who was the heart and soul of his home.

He is survived by his wife, Freda of Auburn; a sister, Beatrice Libby and husband, Clifford, of New Gloucester; three brothers, James and wife, Carol, of Auburn, John and wife, Adele, of Auburn and George and wife, Carol, of Windham; two sisters-in-law, Vida Hunnewell of Lisbon Falls and Cynthia Hunnewell of Durham; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

His family thanks the entire staff at the Androscoggin Hospice for the exceptional care given to Walter.
