CHICAGO (AP) – A witness has testified from behind a temporary wall at the trial of a deputy accused of leaking secrets about an important mob investigation.

The witness known only as Inspector 1 worked in the government’s ultra-secret security program. He took the stand Friday behind the wall in the federal courtroom and described measures taken to protect mobster-turned-witness Nicholas Calabrese.

Deputy U.S. Marshal John T. Ambrose is charged with leaking information about Calabrese’s cooperation with federal agents. Ambrose had guarded Calabrese in October 2002 and again in May 2003.

The defense maintains that Ambrose may have said too much when boasting about his job, but he never violated the law.
