The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will host a two-day Civil War re-enactment with daily, full-scale battles, interactive demonstrations, period food, music and entertainment.
Organizers believe the June event will be the largest Civil War re-enactment ever in Maine.
“We’re really trying to make this whole weekend a step back in time for people,” said Kathleen Beauregard, executive director of the center.
Re-enactors from the 20th Maine Company A, 3rd Maine Company B and the 15th Alabama Company approached Norlands about hosting the event. They wanted to help the living center raise the $15,000 it needs to rebuild its farmer’s cottage and barn, which were destroyed by fire a year ago.
The fundraiser will begin at 9 a.m. on June 6 and will include encampments and other sites with actors who will portray soldiers, medics, citizens at the home front and workers from the time. The actors will interact with visitors and will offer demonstrations.
A full-scale battle re-enactment will be held at 3 p.m. on June 6; a bean supper and contradance will be held that evening.
On June 7, gates will again open at 9 a.m., with re-enactors available all day. A period church service will be held that day. A second full-scale battle will be held at 1 p.m. and a closing event with a concert will start at 3 p.m.
Tickets will cost $7 and will be sold at the gate. Children under 6 will get in free. There will be an additional charge for some events, including an interactive tea party and the contradance.
The event will be held rain or shine.
Organizers are looking for volunteers to staff the two days. For more information, call 897-4366.
