Jaime Burnham, left, 13, and Sierra Thistlewaite, 12, seventh-graders at Lewiston Middle School, paint over graffiti on the vacant building at 449 Sabattus St. in Lewiston on Monday morning. “We’re hoping to cover up all the graffiti on this building,” Thistlewaite said. Seven classmates were participating in the Gang Resistance Education and Training, or G.R.E.A.T. program. It requires six hours of community service to graduate. Middle school resource officer Bill Brochu said they hoped this would spearhead other building owners to call them for graffiti removal. The paint was bought with money from the U.S. Attorney’s office’s Project Safe Neighborhood grant.
