CARRABASSETT VALLEY – More than 5 acres of land burned in separate grass and brush fires over two days.

About 4 acres burned Friday in an area behind the town office on Carriage Road and Little Michael Brook Road, dispatch Supervisor C. L. Folsom said Monday.

It was started after someone emptied out wood stove ashes, he said.

About 1 acres burned Thursday evening on Hammond Pond Road after a permitted brush fire got out of hand.

There will be no burn permits issued in this area for now, Folsom said.

On Monday, New Sharon firefighters and mutual aid departments responded to a grass fire. A woods fire burned about 1 acres on Swan Road, New Sharon Fire Chief Jeff Brackett said.

Firefighters from five departments responded Monday.

A forest ranger from Maine Forest Service is conducting an investigation into the start of the fire, he said.
