As the lights dimmed, and everyone took their seats, four MCs from the Civil Rights Team, Amanda Bennett, Wol Maiwan, Marina Affo, and Ravon Palmer, walked onto the stage. They welcomed the 100-plus people in the audience, and were a little shy, but as the night progressed, they became much more comfortable and were even making the guests laugh!
They announced many talented and entertaining Bates a cappella groups and a gospel choir, each with a unique style of singing. Sylvia Beliveau and I both read poems by Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou about freedom, and before long, it was time for the surprise act! Three clowns clumsily made their way onto the stage and performed. The whole audience was laughing by the time it ended! During the intermission food made by Civil Rights Team members was sold. It was delicious!
As people took their seats for a second time, they watched a few more a cappella groups, and some awesome dances by the Bates dance troupe! As the night came to a close, it was time for the last act. Eleven members of the Civil Rights Team took to the stage and guided the audience through the United States’ journey to freedom, explaining how the different minority groups in our country have had to fight for equal rights. After that, the MCs came onto the stage yet again, but this time to say goodbye.
The night was a success, and all of the profits are going to be very helpful for the team’s trip to Camp Kieve. Great job Civil Rights Team!
