CHESTERVILLE – A local man surrendered to police Monday after about a three-hour standoff at a residence at 648 Zion’s Hill Road.
Brian Sweeney, 57, of Chesterville was arrested on a charge of domestic violence stalking by Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Ken Charles, Lt. Niles Yeaton said Tuesday.
Sweeney was also issued a summons for a civil violation of creating a police standoff, Yeaton said.
Sgt. Steve Lowell and Charles went to the residence with the intention of arresting arrest Sweeney on the domestic charge. Sweeney would not come out of the residence and was ordered to do so, Yeaton said.
Deputies heard what they believed to be a firearm being loaded and backed up to a more secure location but still kept the residence in sight, he said.
Farmington police officer Darin Gilbert and Maine State Police troopers were called in and then later the Maine State Police Tactical Team and surrounded the trailer.
Sweeney came out of the residence at about 3:14 p.m. and was taken into custody, Yeaton said.
A search warrant was obtained for the home. A firearm was not found, he said.
Sweeney had a previous protection-of-abuse order against him in 2006 and told deputies he left the state after that. He returned Saturday,Yeaton said.
