FARMINGTON – County commissioners will consider eliminating the only street light in Madrid Township when they meet on Tuesday, May 19.
The light, located at the intersection of Route 4 and Reeds Mills Road, has not worked for some time, Commission Chairman Fred Hardy said. A resident contacted him about the issue, he said.
“We’re paying $500 a year for a light, and we don’t get any light from it,” Hardy said.
County Clerk Julie Magoon said she was not aware the light had not been working, otherwise she would not have paid for it until it was fixed.
Commissioners agreed to notify residents of the pending action. There is no store or town office in Madrid at which to post a notice, but Magoon said she could put ads in newspapers.
Commissioners also voted to accept a $20,642 justice grant from the federal economic stimulus package.
Sheriff’s Lt. Niles Yeaton said the department would send a deputy to accident reconstruction school and buy crime scene mapping equipment with the grant money.
In other business, commissioners:
• Voted to hire Brian Lynch as a temporary, full-time corrections officer.
• Voted to hire Brad Timberlake of Jay as a part-time dispatcher. He was previously a full-time dispatcher for the Jay Police Department and is currently a full-time dispatcher for the Livermore Falls Police Department.
• Voted to accept the low bid of IEC Electrical and Data Services to be the electrical contractor for the county jail. Four bids were received.
