WINTHROP – A Lewiston woman escaped wet but uninjured Thursday afternoon when she drove her car off the road and into Maranacook Lake.
Police said Hibo Hassan of Knox Street was driving south on Summer Street at about 4:30 p.m. when she lost control of her Toyota Camry. Hassan told police she swerved to avoid a second car that had pulled in front of her.
The Camry skidded off the road and into the lake. It sank within seconds but police said Hassan was able to quickly scramble to safety.
“She was wet from the waist down,” Winthrop police officer Paul Ferland said. “She got out before it went down too deep.”
Winthrop firefighters reached the car by boat and affixed chains. They were able to haul the Camry back to dry land, but the car was considered a total loss.
