FARMINGTON – Ruth Wells Pineau, 92, formerly of Main Street, Jay, died peacefully on Saturday, April 18, at Pinewood Terrace.

She was born on May 4, 1916, in Andover, Mass., the daughter of Harry and Hattie Howland Wells. At 12, her family moved to Wilton, where in 1934 she was graduated from Wilton Academy.

She was married in 1935 to Gerard J. Pineau of Jay, who died in April 1981. Once in Jay, she became a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Parish and remained so for almost 60 years, until the early 1990s, when she sold her home, spending part of year with her children and at her camp on Moosehead Lake.

She and her husband raised three daughters, Donna Treakle of Whitestone, Va., (who died in 2000,) Karen Allen, currently a Jay resident and Linda Burke, now living in Rock Hill, S.C. They also had one son, Bruce, who presently resides in Lyman.

As grandmother of 21 children and great and great-great-grandmother of almost 50 more, she relished every moment she could spend with them, playing games or caring, cooking and knitting for them.

She spent later years writing letters to scores of family members and friends scattered around the country and traveled to spend time with her daughters in Virginia and South Carolina, and her son in southern Maine.

In addition, for nearly 40 years, she delighted in summers spent at her Moosehead Lake camp, where family, friends and drop-in guests were always welcome.

She is survived by her 94-year-old sister, Florence Elita Pike of Wilton.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Helena Hattie Moody and Anita W. Cooper; and her three brothers, Harold Francis, Walter Escott and Carl Vernon Wells.

Her family wishes to thank the entire staff at Pinewood Terrace for the tender generosity and exceptional care provided her.
