Teachers in Montello and Longley elementary schools are Making Math Connections, thanks to Sherry Colarusso, a national trainer and children’s author.

The goal of Making Math Connections training is to maximize math instruction time and help students make connections between the various math strands.

Last August, Montello K-6 teachers and Longley 3-6 teachers spent a week with Colarusso learning about activities and strategies that are aligned to state and national standards. In January, she returned to Lewiston to provide follow-up training and model lessons. Teachers were provided with a wealth of activities and resources to implement in their classrooms.

During her follow-up visit, Colarusso met with Montello’s math team, and provided a one-day training for teachers who were unable to participate last summer. Colarusso also taught students at each grade level in order to demonstrate to teachers how to effectively implement the strategies with their students.

Teachers’ response to the training has been extremely positive. As a result, another round of training is scheduled for Lewiston this summer. In August, McMahon and Longley teachers will have an opportunity to attend the initial Making Math Connections training, which will be followed up by additional training during the school year.
