A spring hike turned scary for a New Hampshire family that got lost in the woods Sunday afternoon in the White Mountains.
Todd Miller, this three daughters and Tiffany Sykes, a relative of the family, were located Sunday evening by members of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Game Wardens following a search that lasted about two hours.
Cpl. Brian Landis with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said the family started their hike earlier in the day in New Hampshire on the Blueberry Mountain Trail, but got turned around on their way up the mountain and ended up coming out of the woods in Maine. Landis said a member of the hiking party had a cell phone and attempted to contact help several times throughout the afternoon after realizing the group was lost.
Finally, around 3:30 p.m., a call went through, but was routed to authorities in New Hampshire, which Landis said is common in that area.
The family was found at about 5:30 p.m.
The contact via cell phone led to a search for the family in both New Hampshire and Maine.
Authorities from the New Hampshire Fish & Game and White Mountain National Forest looked for the family on one side of the mountain, while authorities from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Game Wardens scoured the other side.
“I would be really concerned that the weather changes rapidly on the mountains this time of year,” Landis said, adding that the family was wearing summer clothes and were not prepared for colder temperatures.
