BANGOR, Maine (AP) — A murder trial is under way for a carpenter charged with shooting a 70-year-old friend in the back of the head.

The jury trial of 49-year-old Joseph Dumas of Prentiss is expected to last most of this week in Penobscot County Superior court.

Dumas has pleaded not guilty in the Nov. 8, 2007, death of Mario “Sonny” Litterio of Prentiss. Litterio’s body was found in the woods in Prentiss near some camps where Dumas was working.

According to a police affidavit, Dumas told a detective that he fired multiple shots at Litterio and killed him for no apparent reason. Dumas told police he was “extremely intoxicated” on cocaine at the time.

He’s been held without bail at the Penobscot County Jail since his arrest.
