ORONO (AP) – Two University of Maine football players have signed free-agent contracts with NFL teams after they were passed over during the NFL’s weekend draft.

After the draft ended Sunday, defensive end Jovan Belcher signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Linebacker Andrew Downey signed with the Detroit Lions.

Belcher, who is expected to play linebacker in the NFL, was the Colonial Athletic Association’s defensive player of the year last season. Downey was a second-team all-conference selection.
