AUGUSTA (AP) – The city of Augusta is seizing a former paper mill along the banks of the Kennebec River and plans to demolish it.
The city took ownership of the former Statler mill Tuesday as a tax foreclosure process ended. The owners, Augusta Tissue LLC, owe the city about $650,000 in unpaid taxes and interest.
Augusta is hiring a Massachusetts company, Costello Dismantling of Middleborough, to demolish the building at little cost to the city.
Costello gets salvage rights to the building.
Before the mill comes down, the city is inviting former workers to have a last look at the site of the longtime local employer. The mill closed in 2001.
