Dating back to 2005, the state of Maine, through its MaineCare program, owes Central Maine Medical Center, Rumford and Bridgton hospitals tens of millions of dollars. Try not paying yours bills for that long and see what happens.
That debt continues to grow at nearly $1 million per month.
The state offers and promotes the MaineCare program, seemingly without a plan to ever pay what is owed. Where is the fiscal responsibility?
Back on March 17, Gov. John Baldacci signed a financial order to release $45 million in state funds to alleviate some of that debt. It was good publicity; however, the hospitals have yet to see any reimbursement.
Some in Augusta say the hospitals are getting a huge windfall … when did paying your bills become a windfall?
