LEWISTON – The Western Maine Labor Council, AFL-CIO and Museum L-A will host the third annual Workers’ Memorial Day/May Day Breakfast on Saturday to honor Maine workers who were injured or died on the job last year and to celebrate working people and labor unions.

The breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St. It will be followed by a labor concert at 9:45 a.m. in the upstairs concert hall with longtime labor and social movement musicians Charlie King and Karen Brandow.

The program will conclude with an awards presentation and a closing ceremony to honor the 29 Maine workers who died on the job in 2008.

Among the award recipients will be Lucille Barrett, past president and secretary of Textile Workers Union of America Local 462 at Bates Manufacturing. A millworker for 48 years and born and raised in Lewiston, Barrett is being honored for her dedication to helping her fellow workers, even after retiring.

Another will be given to the workers at Knight Celotex in Lisbon Falls, for standing together and organizing a union at their workplace.

“This gathering will be more than a somber remembrance,” said Western Maine Labor Council President Don Berry. “It’s also a chance to celebrate our proud labor history in Lewiston-Auburn and the surrounding communities.”

The event is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10. All proceeds will benefit Museum L-A and the Western Maine Labor Council.

Workers’ Memorial Day, April 28, is an internationally recognized day chosen to commemorate the founding of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It honors workers who have died or have been injured on the job and re-emphasizes the importance of economic rights in the workplace, and workplace safety.
