CALAIS (AP) – A railroad in eastern Maine is reaching the end of the line with the closure of the Domtar Corp. pulp mill.

Friday will mark the final trip for a Pan Am Railways train that’s rumbled between the mill in Baileyville and the Canadian border two or three time a week bringing pulp bleaching chemicals and other products to the mill and carrying pulp out.

The train won’t be needed any more – at least for now – with Domtar’s decision to close the mill indefinitely as of next Tuesday.

The Bangor Daily News says train service is expected to resume if the mill reopens. But local residents fear the shutdown, which is putting more than 300 people out of work, might become permanent.
