BATH (AP) – The Navy has awarded a contract for another Littoral Combat Ship to a team led by Bath Iron Works.
The contract calls the Coronado to be built at the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala., with General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works overseeing the contract. Terms of the contract were not released, but Congress has imposed a price cap of $460 million per ship.
In March, the Navy awarded a similar contract to Lockheed Martin. The contracts bring the number of the ships being built by GD and Lockheed Martin to two apiece.
The small and speedy warships are designed to thwart emerging threats, including modern-day pirates. BIW’s ship is an aluminum trimaran while Lockheed’s ship is a traditional steel monohull. In the next fiscal year, the Navy is seeking funding for three more of the ships.
