AUGUSTA – Members of Maine’s House of Representatives have voted to approve a bill that would allow same sex marriage after about three hours of debate. The final roll call vote was 89-57 in favor of the measure.

Last week, the Senate voted 21-14 to approve the bill. The Senate will take another vote later this week and after which the legislation is expected to head to the governor’s office.

Gov. John Baldacci has said he opposed same sex marriage in the past, but has recently pledged to keep an open mind. If approved, the law would take effect 90 days after receiving the governor’s signature.
