PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – A Portland restaurant owner has been named the best chef in the Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

Rob Evans, who runs Hugo’s restaurant, was named the winner at Monday night’s awards ceremony in New York City. Evans beat out three chefs from Massachusetts and another chef from Maine for the honor.

The James Beard awards are the Oscars of the food world and honor those who follow in the footsteps of Beard, who was considered the dean of American cooking when he died in 1985.
