LEWISTON – On a mission to share the tradition of baking bread at home, the King Arthur Flour Co. of Norwich, Vt., will visit Martel Elementary School, Farwell Elementary School and Montello Elementary School on Wednesday through Friday, May 13 to 15, to teach more than 600 fourth- through sixth-grade students to bake bread from scratch through its Life Skills Bread Baking Program.
Students will then use their newfound skill – along with ingredients donated by King Arthur Flour – to bake their own loaves, half of which will be donated to the Trinity Jubilee Center and other neighbors in need.
Assemblies will be held as follows:
Wednesday, May 13, at 9:15 a.m., Martel Elementary School gym.
Thursday, May 14, at 2 p.m., Farwell Elementary School cafeteria.
Friday, May 15, at 8:30 and 9:35 a.m., Montello Elementary School cafeteria.
The bread baking program visits middle schools across the country. Students bake the bread at home with their families, then bring a loaf back to school to be donated to a local food pantry or homeless shelter.
Each student will receive bags of all-purpose flour and organic white whole wheat flour to help them bake healthy breads at home.
Life Skills Instructor Paula Gray said she loves teaching children the skill of bread baking – a hands-on way for kids to learn math, science and cultural traditions all while having fun – and hopes they bring that skill home and share it with loved ones.
