FARMINGTON – The driver of a 1997 Saab was charged Tuesday night after his vehicle tore up the lawn of the World War I Arch off Box Shop Hill.

Thomas Coolidge, 24, of Farmington and Bethel, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after his vehicle went onto the lawn tearing up sod, toppling a “do not enter” sign, going through the daffodils and pushing large, granite edgings surrounding the park out of place.

A Maine State Police trooper happened to be passing by and called in the accident shortly after 11 p.m., a representative of the Farmington Police Department said.

No one was injured but Sgt. Peter Barton of the Farmington department estimated damage to the Saab at $5,000.

The park is owned by Franklin County.

The county received an estimate for repairs of $3,165 from E.L. Vining on Wednesday morning, Julie Magoon, county clerk said. The county will file a claim with its insurer.

NorthStar Ambulance also responded to the scene.

Coolidge was released from Franklin County Detention Center on Wednesday on $3,000 unsecured bail and has a court date scheduled for June 18.
