Farmers market
BRIDGTON – The Bridgton farmers market will open Saturday, May 9, at the green at the Bridgton Community Center. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September.
4-H auction set
FRYEBURG – The 16th annual Saco Valley 4-H Beef, Dairy and Sheep Club Take-A-Chance Auction will be Saturday, May 9, at the Forestry Building at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. View items from 5 to 7 p.m.; drawing beings at 7.
There will be food booths, $1 tables and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit the family of Tiffany Hamilton. For more information, call 935-2248.
Sale, auction
PARIS – The Families in Crisis Task Force will hold a yard sale and Chinese auction from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Family Counseling Services Office, 659 Park St. Chinese auction drawings will be held at 2 p.m. Anyone who would like to volunteer time or donate items should contact Peggy at 357-7072.
Sunday service
PARIS – The Mother’s Day service on Sunday, May 10, at the First Universalist Church on Pine Street will be led by Ken Hamilton. The title of Hamilton’s 10 a.m. talk will be “The Healing Power of Presence.”
Coffee, brunch and fellowship will follow. All are welcome and child care is available.
Gardening course
BRIDGTON – “From the Soil Up: A Course for Beginning Gardeners” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, May 12, July 14 and Aug. 18, at the Bridgton Community Center, 15 Depot St.
It will teach the basics of home vegetable gardening, from garden planning to pest management, harvest and storage, taught by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. For more information, call the BCC at 647-3116.
Benefit dinner
WATERFORD – A benefit spaghetti dinner and raffle will be held Saturday, May 16, for Danno Smith of Springers’ Store. He is recovering from serious emergency heart surgery.
The event will take place in the Waterford Memorial School gym with dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m., dancing, entertainment, including Vocal Solutions, and bingo for the kids from 7 to 8 p.m.
The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children over 6 years.There will be homemade meatballs and spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and dessert.
Raffle tickets will be sold at the door and prior to the event for $5 at Melby’s and from Peter at 583-4502. Winning tickets will be announced at the event. Items include: a half cord firewood, two nights at the Bear Mountain Inn, dinner for two at the Old Mill, tickets to the Magic Lantern and five pounds of bison meat from Melby’s.
Ministry sale
NORWAY – The Youth Ministry of St. Catherine’s Church will hold a rummage sale from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at the parish hall, 32 Paris St. A selection of summer clothing and white elephant items will be available. The funds earned will be used for retreats and charities for young people.
Society evening
WEST PARIS – The West Paris Historical Society will host a special evening of entertainment at 6 p.m. Monday, May 18. A 1994 production at the society, including the Parisians and other special acts, will be shown by Milt Inman. The public is invited.
Screening set
PARIS – Registration and screening for next year’s kindergarten class at Paris Elementary School will be held on Tuesday, May 19.
Children who will be age 5 on or before Oct. 15 are eligible to attend kindergarten. Parents are encouraged to contact the school office immediately to set an appointment time for May 19. Appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Parents must present a copy of the child’s official birth certificate, a copy of the immunization record and a copy of the child’s most recent physical exam.

Bridge results
NORWAY – The Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met May 1 in the Fare Share Commons Building, Main Street. A four-table Howell movement was played.
Finishing first in Flight A were Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer, second, Hazel Glazier and Priscilla Roth, first in Flight B; third, Mike True and Errol Libby; second in Flight B, Arlen Riis and Bob Clifford; third, Cynthia Clifford and Lois Barr.

Audubon to host
OTISFIELD – The Maine Audubon Society will present a lecture on “Significant Wildlife Habitat” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Otisfield Town Hall, Route 121.
The talk will be of interest to landowners, land trusts, lake organizations, those interested in protecting the riparian zones along the Crooked River, conservation committees, developers and town planners. Admission is free and the public is invited.
