Board: Sabattus Board of Selectmen

Met: Tuesday night

Property fine

Issue: For several months, the town and Neil Marchesseault have gone back and forth about an auto graveyard on his property at 6 Meadows Lane.

The scoop: The cars have been cleaned up. Selectmen could have levied a $2,500 fine. Instead, they opted for a $595 fine, which covered the code enforcement officer’s time spent on the case.

No charities on warrant

Issue: In past years, selectmen have put charities on the town meeting warrant if a representative wrote a letter asking to be included. Last year, for the first time in recent memory, voters actually approved giving money to those charities, Town Clerk Suzanne Adams said.

The scoop: The town charter says a letter isn’t enough. No charities are going on the warrant this year, to the disappointment of some.

Up next: Next spring, charities that want to get on the warrant will have to pay the board a visit well in advance of town meeting.

Timber

Issue: Five rotting trees at Martin’s Point need to come down. Selectmen OK’d an arborist’s quote for $500.

Up next: Replacement trees will be planted in the fall.

Upcoming meetings

Issue: Selectmen signed off on 52 articles for the town warrant. The books will be ready to be picked up at the town office May 14. Town meeting is May 30 at 9 a.m. at the Sabattus Central School.

Issue: Sabattus, Wales and Litchfield residents can shape the school budget May 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Oak Hill High School. On June 9, residents may either pass or reject the school union budget by paper ballot.
