The Pine Tree League opened its baseball season Sunday with four area games. As previously reported, the Winthrop Red Sox defeated the Fairfield Rockies.
Rumford 4, Jay 2: In Jay, Mark Palmer pitched six strong innings to earn the win on the mound in opening day action for the Rumford Cardinals over the Jay Orioles. The Cardinals got on the board first in the top of the first, scoring three unearned runs off hard-luck loser Jim Flagg. The Cardinals scored another run in the sixth when Chris Cayer hit a double and crossed the plate on a throwing error.
The Orioles cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Bessey doubled home Jon Laverdiere and a throwing error plated Bessey.
Steve Lapointe pitched the last three innings to earn the save. Ryan Palmer led the Cards with two hits. Cayer, Rich Todd and
Bitsy Ionta also contributed to the five-hit attack. Bessey had four hits to lead Jay. Derek Armandi delivered two hits, with one each by Greg Conley, Chad Dumais and Nate Fetterhoff.
West Paris 7, Auburn 2: Brian Cox pitched five shutout innings and received early run support early as the Westies prevailed at Pettengill Park. Cox also had three hits and scored three runs. Mike McBride and Charlie Buker each had two hits, while Jerod Verrill produced three RBIs. Wocenske was the lone repeat hitter for Auburn, with Labossiere and Kearns scoring runs.
Central Maine 11-12, Pittsfield 4-6: The Central Maine Green Wave swept the Pittsfield Pirates in a doubleheader at Winslow. In the first game, the Green Wave tallied 11 runs on 12 hits, led by Joel Fernald (4-for-5, five RBIs). John Durrell earned the win, going seven innings while striking out seven. The Pirates tallied nine hits, led by Josh Luellen (3-for-4) and Gary Morin (2-for-4). Trevor Goforth pitched seven solid innings, striking out seven.
In the nightcap, Kris Targett pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out six with one walk before giving way to Kevin Main. Central Maine rolled up eight runs in the last two innings to pull away. In the top of the seventh with two outs and the bases loaded, Luellen made a highlight-reel catch while bouncing off the left field wall to deny the Green Wave additional damage.
Main earned the victory over 2 2/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing two hits. Kyle Gunzinger (2-for-3) and Andy Oliver (2-for-3) led the Green Wave.
Darren Spack was 2-for-3 for the Pirates. Gary Morin took the loss despite a strong pitching performance, allowing four runs on four hits and two strikeouts.
