LEWISTON – If somebody writes a book or produces a film about the Lewiston High School girls’ lacrosse season, “Twilight” probably won’t be the working title.

Playing at dinner time, with a suddenly blinding sunshine peering over the budding trees adjacent to the artificial turf at Bates College, was no early help to the Blue Devils’ offense.

Good teams adapt, though, and the senior-laden hosts saved their flashes of brilliance for the longer shadows Friday evening.

Saba Naji and Kristen Lacasse scored back-to-back goals both in the first three minutes and final two minutes of the first half, and Lewiston steadily pulled away after intermission for a 15-6 victory over Edward Little.

Naji scored three of her five goals in the first half for Lewiston (2-2). Though the Blue Devils never trailed after Naji and Lacasse netted a 2-0 lead, they watched the Red Eddies tiptoe within a single goal on three different occasions.

“Our nerves got us in the beginning, but we did play it off in the end,” said Naji, a sophomore. “Offensively and defensively we were better than our last game.”

Lacasse added three goals while Kristin McCombs, Olivia Fournier and Shelby Turcotte each collected two. Kayla Hamel supplemented her goal with four assists.

Carmen Lasagna, Alicia Large and Katie Williamson kept EL (0-4) afloat with first-half goals. Lasagna concluded with three.

“It got better. We forced it a lot in the beginning,” said Lewiston coach Christy Gardner. “We’ve actually never played this late in the day. They were forcing passes they normally make and then realizing their teammates couldn’t see it. We started just running it down past them instead of passing it.”

Defense also buckled down, holding the Eddies scoreless for an 11-minute span of the second half. Fournier, McCombs and Hamel cashed in consecutively to make it a 10-4 advantage with 10:43 left.

“At first we weren’t taking very good shots,” said Lewiston senior goalie Stephanie Belanger. “But we settled down and we got things rolling.”

Eight Devils ended up in the scoring column. Michelle Rancourt and Beth Lebel picked up assists.

Naji made use of a centering pass from Hamel to score Lewiston’s first goal of the second half. Later, she provided the exclamation point to a four-shot barrage that included two brilliant saves by EL’s Liz Barclay.

“Everybody on our team can run, which is a good thing,” Naji said. “We’re pretty proud. We’re having fun.”

Maddie Williamson added a goal for the Eddies.

Barclay made 19 saves in the EL cage. Belanger denied a baker’s dozen.

“Our defense played solid today. It was nice to all four normal defenders here at the game,” Gardner said. “We still don’t have a complete team. I still think we have a shot to play for the state championship.”
