AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Budget negotiators in the Maine Legislature are back at work trying to resolve some of the most divisive issues before them.

Bargainers have begun to extend their daily discussions into the night in hopes of narrowing the scope of unfinished matters and moving toward final compromises.

Still on the table are proposals to cut personnel spending without laying off employees and to boost income tax revenue without directly raising income tax rates.

Majority Democrats are pushing to conclude deliberations by the Appropriations Committee as soon as possible. But they’ll need votes from the minority Republican blocs in the House of Representatives and Senate to pass a two-year general fund budget that can take effect by July 1.
