Negotiations between the electrical workers union and Central Maine Power ended Friday night with no resolution as the existing contract was to expire at midnight.

In a press release sent out Friday night, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1837 said CMP officials made an offer that the union considered inadequate before the meeting ended.

“In spite of being a profitable company,” union leaders stated in a press release, “CMP continues to demand substantial concessions on benefits.

The two sides have been at odds over concessions that affect workers’ health care benefits and retirement packages.

Last week the union turned down a CMP contract offer and authorized a strike at midnight Friday. Whether a work stoppage will result remained to be seen.

“The union is advising all of its members to report to work as scheduled,” the press release stated, “for the time being.”

The IBEW Local 1837 represents approximately 700 workers at CMP.
