WEST PARIS – Authorities in Oxford County are continuing their investigation into an accidental shooting Sunday afternoon that sent one man to the hospital via medical helicopter.
Lael Scott, 29, was transported to Central Maine Medical Center about 1 p.m. Sunday after being shot in the chest at the Sumner Road home where he has been staying the past several weeks. A nursing supervisor at the hospital declined to release any information about his condition Sunday night.
“Right now, it’s still under investigation, but it appears to be accidental,” said Sgt. Tim Holland of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
Holland said that authorities are still conducting interviews about the shooting, which occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Scott was shot when a gun being cleaned by Ernest Wesley, 67, accidentally discharged. Wesley and his wife own the home at 93 Sumner Road where Scott, who is originally from Northern Maine, had been staying.
Holland said that everyone involved in the shooting was fully cooperating with authorities.
